In the 1970s and 80s, pollutants released from burning fossil fuels began falling back to Earth as acid rain. Acid rain ruined streams and lakes, killed fish and trees and even corroded bridges.
In response, President George H.W. Bush and Democrats in the House and Senate worked together to place limits on certain pollutants. They created a cap on the pollution emitted and charged the polluters a price for the pollutants they were putting in our air. The results were dramatic, dropping pollution by millions of tons and effectively ending the acid rain crisis we faced.
By 2003, an audit found the Acid Rain Program was 75% cheaper to implement than predicted, and returned 40-times the benefits versus the cost – $70 billion per year in human health benefits.
Because of the price on the pollutants, large emitters found cleaner, more efficient ways to power their operations and for the least cost. Decades ago we solved an environmental crisis by putting a price on pollution.
Just over 1,000 Oregonians have signed our petition to put a price on climate pollution. Let’s double that! Will you sign? And if you already have, will you send this to two people you know? www.reneworegon.org/clean_energy_jobs_petition?e=b69de4a15d27c62d2273c669500c9ae3&utm_source=reneworegon&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=cleanepet_2&n=4
Oregon can be a leader by limiting and pricing climate pollution. Join Renew Oregon to lead the charge to limit pollution from dirty fuels and accelerate investment in our communities across Oregon. Will you join us? It’s our next big step in a march from pollution to prosperity!
The key to Lakey’s plan requires understanding "Why a Strategy?"
A Strategy wins the war, while Trump wins battles on a daily basis.
A Strategy has vision, values, foresight, principles, actionable goals.
Recognize that we represent the majority, not Trump. (74 million people did not vote for Trump, while he got 62 million votes. A 12 million vote diff.)
Strengthen civic institutions and their connections with targeted populations.
Play offense, not defense.
Link campaigns to build movements.
Link movements to create a movement of movements.
Avoid one-off demonstrations.
Heighten the contrast in confrontations between the campaigners’ behavior and our right-wing opponents.
Aim to unite around a vision for justice, equality and freedom.
Make the vision more real by extending new economy institutions and coops.
See U.S. polarization as opportunity.
Hey Arlene, I’m a volunteer with central operations. Starting up an LA team would be great - if you send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org we can talk more about this since I’ll help you with it.
Great ideas, @igranderojo! Sharp is definitely central to my thoughts on strategy and nonviolent action. I’d also recommend This Is an Uprising by Engler and Engler. Let’s plan on getting a group together to meet in the new year!
“There is a paradoxical benefit when someone takes to an absurd length a completely erroneous position because that then unmasks the error in such a vivid way that allows everyone else to refute, to join together and to be embolden to move forward.”
When this behavior is generalized and becomes a social norm, this would destroy verbal communication. Since the practice of lying at your convenience reduces to absurdity when implemented as a general rule, this is judged to be morally unacceptable.
Example of President-elect Trump lying:
"If Russia, or some other entity, was hacking, why did the White House wait so long to act? Why did they only complain after Hillary lost?”
Fact: Accusations came months before the election.
First, lying. Trump lies, therefore everyone will lie. Start telling lies. Make things up about China or Russia. Think about your beliefs and what you know as Truth, then state the opposite.
As a form of protest, everyone will behave in morally unacceptable ways. Let’s start with lying and then move on to self-contraction and giving instructions that can not be satisfied.
Argument from Consequences
If we get rid of our cows then we won’t have meat to eat or milk to drink and that would be terrible for our young children, and people have always eaten meat and drank milk therefore cow farts are not killing our planet.
President Trump wants to register Muslims. President Trump wants to protect America from Islamic Terrorism.
President Trump wants an open border with Canada so that their weak immigration policy allows terrorists to enter America.
President Trump is not a real Republican. The Donald is a member of the new Whig Party that has anti-Catholic, racist, anti-immigrant, white supremacists called “know-nothings”.
