The language of the City-By-City intro page is off-putting to those officials because it talks about “building excitement” and is more focused on speaking to mobilizers who are organizing from the ground up. But change also does happen from the top, when those in elected positions become convinced of the wisdom and efficacy of mobilization. Could you change the language just a little, add some nice photos of the initiatives in other cities, and make it so we could print out or purchase from you, a nice glossly, slick-looking packet we can present over lunch, one-on-one. They are used to getting packets from contractors hoping to work for the city, etc., so the look and feel of it matters. That’s why I say, we could purchase it – make it POD Print On Demand. So we could order just what we need. Thank you for thinking about this.

RE: Conservative Outreach Ideas
@greg I’ve been appalled at the great number of naturalists, employed by county parks, private reserves, and college extension offices, who refuse to mention anything about climate in their environmental presentations. I book these people for our library. They will say things like “well, we don’t talk about climate, we’re all about the animals” or "there’s conflicting data, so we just teach about conservation…"
I’d like develop an outreach to them.
RE: Conservative Outreach Ideas
@greg I contacted them and saw the film. I live near the biggest air base. interested in showing it on base, but it is very weak in my opinion, on connecting human activity with global warming. it is big on adaptation and response. what did you think about it?
RE: Victory Plan Discussion: General Feedback
@igranderojo That hasn’t been my experience working with these generations. IMHOP We can’t look to boomers for “morals values and beliefs” as they have none. they are stuck in cynicism and indecision. They got us into this mess with their self-serving ways. The Millenials are the star children, psychic and sensitive, and filled with an intuitive spiritual truth which will fuel and inspire the great changes we are to make. They will be our touchstone, our reason for changing, they’ll be the confidant example that the new way will be Okay for us all – it will be fun!.. The GenXers are the Indigoes, creative inventors, with high ideals, and courage to go outside the box, networkers, the ones who make things happen, and make technology work for everyone.
A vegetarian defends meat
Karen Jeffers Tracy
I’ve been vegetarian for 37 years, (convinced by Frances Moore Lappe, when I was 20, that world hunger would be solved if we all went vegetarian) – so it’s a bit ironic that I’m the one advocating that TCM change wording on meat. Changing people’s food is so intimate, so fundamental to them, that the intrusive nature of that – will produce more push-back than any other sacrifice we are asking people to make.
Carnivores will die for their meat. They will consign future generations to perdition for their meat. And some of them physically will not be able to make the transition and still feel energetic and productive.
I was vegan for ten years, but then switched back to vegetarian and felt better. Everyone has their own balance to find, their own health requirements to satisfy.
Instead of “reduced meat production” – what about “reasonable meat production” or “meat production in accordance with a balanced ecosystem”
People will be consuming
"Reasonable amounts and sources of meat, as healthy for the individual" We don’t want to imply there will be “meat police” who will limit your consumption or make it so expensive that a family can’t afford any at all.
[An Aside – That’s exactly where the “global warming conspiracy” ideas come from – that liberals are seeking every avenue to reach into individual freedoms – your dinner plate! – and take them away. (I know, I know…meanwhile conservatives want to invade bedrooms and bodies.) ]
During WWII, a lot of sacrifices – like food shortages and rationing – were acceptable because they were “in it for the duration,” but people could look forward to a time of plenty. We’re asking people to make (perceived) sacrifices, and measured consumption – FOREVER! – , in transitioning to a new world, and a new way of living in that world.
That seems to me, huge enough, without ranging the meat eaters against us at the very outset.
I did watch Cowspiracy. I think there’s more to it than that. And I wasn’t impressed with the protocols in their studies. TCM must make recommendations based on studies published in peer-reviewed science journals. It’s the CAFOs Confined Animal Feed Operations and grain-fed factory-farming which decimates the environment and atmosphere. Not the local meat you get at your farmers market. Feeding grain to cows produces more methane than when they are fed their natural diet – grass. There’s more but I don’t have time now to write a treatise. Thanks for listening!
RE: Climate Change unimaginably complex
S. Hopkins - True, true. Sometimes the complexity of climate science is a challenge to convey as well. And yet, we already have examples of countries which have made great strides. The U.S. seems particularly behind the times, and insulated from realities the rest of the world faces daily.
I hold out great hope that alternative technologies will continue to develop to the point of being super-efficient, and easily affordable or even easy to do-it-yourself. Because, if you could charge your electric car with the solar panels on your roof, wouldn’t you choose that over paying at the gas pump every week?
I see a day when everyone will have within easy reach – a makerspace or community development office which holds regular workshops where people build their own solar panels, gravity lights, and who knows what else may be coming that will help us change our ways.
The “mechanism for uniting the entire human species” is education, communication – saturation of Climate Truth into the consciousness of the world. This has the potential to be achieved, which would have been unimaginable before the internet.
I also know “the hundredth monkey” phenomena – there is something that unites human consciousness, beyond our current ways of knowing. The climate mobilization is really powerful because it is activating those of us willing to be the first 100 monkeys. We all understand that climate is an emergency, we are acting on that knowledge daily, we are communicating it, thinking about it, strategizing about it…and that’s when the critical mass is reached, and like the hundredth monkey – once it learned how to use the new tool – the entire other island of monkeys – unconnected to the first – suddenly had the knowledge and began using the tool as well.
We can do this.
New Strategies for Mobilization under a conservative government.
With control of all three branches of government plus the Supreme Court, the conservative agenda will be able to restructure the government and our lives, according to their political ideology.
This thread is to address this. My first inclination is to say – we’ll have to talk their language: Money.
Hence: Make our Top Talking Point that "Climate Change is EXPENSIVE."
Here are some other talking points we could make, when we lobby them:
Unchecked and accelerated climate change is going to be EVEN MORE EXPENSIVE.
The real estate moguls who are your friends (one percenters) will LOSE A LOT OF MONEY if they own coastal resorts and condos.
Your yachting and island vacations won’t be nearly as enjoyable.
The FEMA budget is going to need more than the current military budget, as all the inland states will be forced to accept refugees from Florida, So Cal, Louisana, etc.
Your accelerated fracking initiative is going to result in civil wars over drinking water. Hope you have a big budget for your militarized police.
The United Nations is going censure and then facilitate other nations in holding you (the U.S. government) legally liable for accelerating climate change. Getting sued is EXPENSIVE.
Anybody else have any other ideas for strategy under the new regime?
